This publication is intended to support water utilities, especially in EMDEs, (Emerging Markets and Developing Economies), to broaden their knowledge of the currently available methods, including their advantages, disadvantages, application possibilities and limitations to be
able to make an initial pre-evaluation of the methods under the respective local conditions.

2nd Edition Smart Water Management

Digitalization is transforming the way water and wastewater utilities plan and manage their infrastructure and interact with their customers and their staff. Globally, digital technologies have been playing a role in resource efficient water management for some time, including in the management of water losses and the energy efficiency of utilities. Digital applications have been developed for customer engagement, leak detection, pressure management, energy efficient pumping, energy management and wastewater treatment.

This document addresses these differences, from tariff structures to levels of water losses, and identifies opportunities for digitalization in resource-efficient water management that can work especially well in EMDEs. It also discusses some digital applications that are already in widespread use in high-income countries, but due to economic, technical or other factors are not currently suited to the needs of EMDEs.

In a time where climate change, regional and local water scarcity and droughts are frequent and increasing, groundwater can be a sustainable source of high-quality drinking water. Whether relying on a groundwater supply entirely, or as a supplement to surface water, the potential is considerable.

Learning Objectives

• Participants are aware of the opportunity of a low carbon future for utilities and the necessity to adopt a “low-Carbon” mindset.
• Participants will become familiar with the WaCCliM Roadmap, its five-step process and a number of critical components (which include data management needs and assessment tools, an enabling environment, a ‘bankable’ project proposal, and a monitoring plan).
• Participants have several ideas of practical measures that can be implemented by utilities to become climate smart, illustrated by case studies.
• Participants have a go-to resource to apply the five-step process and are energised to initiate action within their organization.

Agua y Clima | Hacia un Sector del Agua Resiliente y Neutro en Carbono

Para poder limitar el cambio climático a 1,5°C, es necesario que todos los sectores sean más ambiciosos en cuanto a sus objetivos de reducción de GEI. Sin embargo, en numerosos países las posibilidades de reducir las emisiones en el sector urbano del agua no se contemplan en las NDC para el debido cumplimiento del Acuerdo de París. El proyecto Empresas de Servicios de Agua y
Saneamiento para la Mitigación del Cambio Climático (WaCCliM) apoya a las empresas de agua y saneamiento para reducir su huella de carbono y adaptarse a los impactos del cambio climático. Mediante un enfoque intersectorial que abarca la mitigación y la adaptación, consideramos las implicaciones de los gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) en el nexo agua-energía-carbono.

Linking Water and Climate | Towards a Carbon Neutral, Risk Resilient Water Sector

Limiting climate change to 1.5°C requires all sectors to increase their GHG reduction ambitions. In many countries, however, the opportunities to reduce emissions in the urban water sector are not included as part of the NDCs for the successful implementation of the Paris Agreement. The “Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation” (WaCCliM) project supports water and wastewater utilities to reduce their carbon footprints and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Following a cross-sectoral approach that spans mitigation and adaptation, WaCCliM considers the implications of greenhouse gases in the water–energy–carbon nexus.

The “Linking Water and Climate” brochure gives an overview on WaCCliM’s background, objectives, goals and approach to achieve a carbon neutral, risk resilient water sector.
